The way to avoid a horrible bill after a holiday is to decide, before you fly, which phones actually need data abroad — and then switch data roaming off on all the others. Add holiday data to the lines that need it in /app, download your maps at home over wifi, and you are sorted.
In most families that means two phones with travel data and three phones on wifi only. That is usually plenty, and it costs a fraction of everyone roaming freely.
A week before you go
- 1
Decide who actually needs data
Usually one or two adults for maps, boarding passes, restaurant bookings and the group chat. Kids can very often live on hotel and cafe wifi. Be honest about who really needs it rather than buying for everyone by default.
- 2
Add holiday data to those lines in /app
Open your huddle dashboard, pick the line, and add travel data for the trip. You do it per line, so you are not paying for five phones when two will do.
- 3
Turn data roaming OFF on every other line
iPhone: Settings → Mobile Service → Mobile Data Options → Data Roaming, off. Android: Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → Roaming, off. Do this on the kids' phones yourself while they are in the room.
- 4
Download offline maps
In Google Maps, search the area, tap the place name, then Download offline map. Apple Maps has offline maps too. Do it on home wifi. This one step removes most of the data a holiday would otherwise eat.
- 5
Download the entertainment too
Netflix, Disney+, Spotify and YouTube all let you download at home. An hour of downloaded telly for the flight and the coach transfer saves more data than any other trick here.
- 6
Screenshot the important stuff
Boarding passes, hotel address, booking references, transfer times. If a phone loses signal at the wrong moment, a screenshot in the camera roll still works.
How much data does a holiday actually need?
Rough guide for one person on a one-week trip, assuming you have hotel wifi in the evenings and downloaded your maps before you left:
| Type of traveller | What they do abroad | Rough data for a week |
|---|---|---|
| Light | WhatsApp, offline maps, a few photos to the family group, boarding passes | About 1GB |
| Typical | Messaging, live maps and directions, social scrolling, photos and short videos uploaded, the odd search | About 3–5GB |
| Heavy | Video calls home, streaming music out and about, YouTube or TikTok on the beach, uploading video | 10GB or more |
Keeping an eye on the kids' usage
Because every line sits in one huddle, you can see what each phone is using in /app — no guessing, no waiting for the bill. Check it once a day on holiday and you will spot a runaway phone on day two rather than day seven.
- Look at usage per line in /app. One phone using ten times what the others use is a conversation, not a mystery.
- Top up the phone that needs it rather than everyone. Takes seconds from your dashboard.
- Turn on the phone's own data saver — iPhone Low Data Mode, Android Data Saver — on the kids' handsets.
- Turn off auto-play video in TikTok, Instagram and YouTube settings, and set video quality to low or wifi-only.
- Stop automatic photo and video backup over mobile data. iCloud and Google Photos will happily upload a fortnight of 4K video the moment they get signal.
- Agree the rule out loud before you fly: video and downloads on wifi, messaging anywhere. Kids follow a rule they heard better than one they discover.
If this is a first phone going on its first holiday, first phone for your child covers the settings worth locking down more generally.
While you are away
- Use hotel, cafe and airport wifi for anything big — downloads, updates, backups, video calls home.
- Keep calls and messages in WhatsApp or FaceTime where you can. Calling a foreign number the normal way is charged separately.
- Watch for phone software updates. A 6GB iOS update over roaming data would be a sad way to spend your holiday allowance.
- If a phone shows no signal after landing, restart it, then toggle airplane mode on and off. That fixes it nine times out of ten.
- Need more data mid-trip? Add it in /app from wherever you are, as long as one phone has a connection.
When you get home
Turn data roaming back off on any line you switched on, and check your huddle dashboard once so there are no surprises. Then your lines carry on as normal — unlimited UK calls and texts, one bill, no contract.
Adding a line for someone joining the next trip? See add a family member — every extra line makes the whole huddle cheaper. Or start your huddle before the next holiday sneaks up.

Questions we get asked
Do I need to add travel data for every phone in the family?
No, and most families should not. Add it to the one or two lines that genuinely need data out and about, and turn data roaming off on the rest.
How much holiday data does one person need for a week?
Roughly 1GB if they mostly use wifi and offline maps, 3–5GB for typical use, and 10GB or more if they stream video away from wifi.
How do I stop the kids running up data abroad?
Turn data roaming off on their lines, download entertainment before you fly, switch on their phone data saver, and check usage per line in /app once a day.
Can I add more data while we are already away?
Yes. Sign in at /app from any connected phone and top up the line that needs it. You do not have to wait until you are home.
