How to keep your number when you switch

The Huddle Mobile team 5 min readUpdated 12 August 2026

You keep your number by getting a PAC code from your old network and giving it to us. To get one, text PAC to 65075 from the phone with the number on it. Your old network texts the code back, usually within a minute.

Hand that code over and the transfer normally completes in about one working day. Your old plan cancels itself when the number moves — you do not need to ring anyone to end it.

What a PAC code is

A PAC is a Porting Authorisation Code — a short code that proves you own your number and gives your new network permission to move it. Every UK network has to give you one on request, free, whether you are on contract or pay as you go.

It is valid for 30 days. Get it, use it, done. If it expires, just text 65075 again.

Moving your number, step by step

  1. 1

Get your Huddle line working first

Order the line and set up the eSIM using the temporary number we give you. See how to set up your eSIM. Having the line live before you port means no gap where the phone does nothing.

  2. 2

    Text PAC to 65075

Send it from the phone that has the number you want to keep. Your old network replies by text with your PAC code, plus any outstanding balance you owe them. It is free and it usually lands within a minute.

  3. 3

Give us the code in /app

Sign in, open the line, choose Bring my number across and enter the PAC plus the number you are moving. Double-check every digit — a typo is the single most common reason a port stalls.

  4. 4

    Carry on using your phone

Keep the old SIM in and working while you wait. Calls and texts on the old number keep arriving until the moment it switches.

  5. 5

    Wait about one working day

Transfers normally complete the next working day, usually during the day. There may be a short window — often only minutes — where calls and texts are unreliable while the number moves.

  6. 6

    Check it landed

Ring your own number from another phone, or ask someone to text you. When it comes through on your Huddle line, you are done — and your old plan closes itself.

Porting the whole family

Everyone gets their own PAC. If your family is spread across three different networks, that is three separate texts to 65075 from three different phones — there is no way to bundle it, sorry.

  • Each person texts PAC to 65075 from their own handset.
  • Add each code to the matching line in /app — not all to one line.
  • Ports do not have to happen on the same day. Move people as they are ready.
  • Kids and grandparents: whoever holds the phone needs to send the text, so do it sitting with them.

While you are at it, adding everyone to one huddle makes every line cheaper — see add a family member.

What comes with you (and what does not)

ThingComes with you?
Your 07 mobile numberYes — that is the whole job
Contacts, photos, WhatsApp chatsYes, they live on your phone or its backup, not on the network
Any leftover data or minutes on the old planNo — use them up first if you can
Your old network voicemail messagesNo. Save anything you need before you port
An outstanding balance or early exit feeYes, unfortunately — your old network still bills you for it

If the transfer stalls

  • Check the number and code you entered, digit by digit. Most stalls are a typo.
  • Check the PAC has not expired. They last 30 days — text 65075 for a fresh one.
  • Check it is the right number. People occasionally port a number that is not the one on the phone they are holding.
  • Weekend or bank holiday? Nothing moves until the next working day.
  • Still stuck after two working days? Message us in /app with the number and PAC and we will chase it.

A word on switching in general

There is no contract at Huddle, so nothing here locks you in — if you ever want to leave, you ask us for a PAC and take your number away exactly the same way. Fair is fair.

Weighing it up against what you have now? Try family plan vs separate contracts. Or just start your huddle and port when you are ready.

Questions we get asked

How do I get my PAC code?

Text PAC to 65075 from the phone with the number on it. Your network texts your code back, usually within a minute, and it is free.

How long does it take to move my number?

Usually about one working day. Weekends and bank holidays push it to the next working day, and a wrong digit can add another.

Will I lose service while it happens?

Not really. Your old SIM keeps working until the switch, and there is often only a short window — sometimes minutes — where calls and texts are unreliable.

Should I cancel my old plan first?

No. Never. Cancelling first can release the number back to your old network and you may lose it permanently. Port first, and the old plan cancels itself.
