How to cut your family's phone bill

The Huddle Mobile team 5 min readUpdated 12 August 2026

Most families overpay for three reasons: they are still paying off handsets they already own, they buy big data for people who barely use it, and every line is billed separately at full price. Fix those three and the bill usually drops without anyone noticing a difference in their phone.

Here is the order we would do it in, starting with the change that saves the most for the least effort.

Stop paying for a handset you already own

A normal phone contract is two things bundled together: the phone, and the airtime. When the phone is paid off, plenty of contracts just keep charging the same amount every month. You are renting something you own.

Check each line. If the handset payments have finished, or the phone was bought outright or handed down, that line only needs SIM-only airtime. That single check is usually the biggest number on this page.

Right-size the data, person by person

Families tend to buy the biggest data allowance for everyone because one person needs it. It is easier to look at actual usage. Most phones show it under Settings, and your provider's app will show the last few months.

  • Someone on wifi at home and at work or school often uses less than you would guess.
  • The heavy user is usually one specific person, and it is usually video.
  • A grandparent on messages, calls and the odd map lookup rarely needs much at all.

With Huddle everyone gets their own plan with unlimited UK calls and texts, and you pick data to suit each person. So the teenager can have plenty and nobody else has to pay for it. If you want the longer version, read family mobile plans explained.

Put everyone on one plan for the multi-line discount

This is the bit separate contracts can never do. When your lines sit together, the discount applies to every line, not just the new one. Add a line and the whole huddle gets cheaper.

Lines in your huddleDiscountPrice per line
1None£8.00
25% off£7.60
3–410% off£7.20
5+20% off£6.40
The discount applies automatically to every line. There is no code to enter and nobody to haggle with.

So a house of five is at about £6 a month per line, and it arrives as one bill on one card. Everyone still has their own real UK mobile number starting 07, on their own plan.

Use the wifi you already pay for

You are already paying for broadband at home. Two small habits keep data spend down without any nagging:

  • Make sure every phone in the house actually joins the home wifi automatically. One phone stuck on mobile data all evening can quietly eat a whole allowance.
  • Downloads before a long trip: music, shows, podcasts, maps. Done at home, they cost nothing.

Heading overseas is a separate question, and worth planning rather than guessing. See taking your family phone abroad.

Cancel the old contracts, in the right order

Order matters here. Move the number first, then cancel. Cancelling first can lose the number.

  1. 1List every mobile line in the house and what each one costs. Include the ones nobody looks at.
  2. 2For each line, check whether the handset is paid off and whether the contract has a notice period or an early exit fee.
  3. 3Check each person's real data usage over the last three months, then pick the plan size that matches it.
  4. 4Get a PAC code from the old provider for every number you want to keep. It is free and it arrives quickly. See keeping your number.
  5. 5Set up the lines in your huddle, give the PAC codes, and scan each eSIM QR code on the right phone.
  6. 6Once each number has moved across and is working, the old accounts close as part of the switch. Check your next bank statement to be sure nothing is still being taken.

What to do this week

  1. 1

    Sunday: gather the bills

One cup of tea, every mobile bill in the house, one list. Most families are surprised by the total, and by at least one line they forgot about.

  2. 2

    Monday: request the PAC codes

Free, quick, and valid for a while, so getting them early costs nothing and keeps your options open.

  3. 3

Any evening: switch the phones over

Set the lines up, scan a QR code per phone, and you are live in minutes. Nothing is posted, so there is no waiting for SIMs to arrive. Start your huddle when you are ready.

  4. 4

    Next month: adjust

Look at the portal at /app, see who actually used what, and nudge data up or down. No contract means no penalty for getting it wrong first time.

The cheapest phone bill is the one where nobody is paying for something they are not using.

Questions we get asked

Do I need a code or a phone call to get the multi-line discount?

No. The discount is worked out from how many lines are in your huddle and applied to every line automatically. There is nothing to enter and nobody to negotiate with.

Will switching lose our phone numbers?

Not if you port them. Ask each old provider for a PAC code and give it to us when you set the line up. The number moves across. Just do not cancel the old contract before the number has moved.

Can I put some family members on Huddle and leave others where they are?

Yes, and lots of people start that way. Bear in mind the discount is based on how many lines are in your huddle, so the lines you leave behind do not count towards it.

What if someone in the family has an older phone?

eSIM needs a compatible phone, so check that first. If a handset is too old, that person can stay where they are for now, or use a hand-me-down phone that does support eSIM.

Get the family sorted

Everyone gets their own line, you get one simple bill — and every line you add makes them all cheaper.
