An eSIM is a SIM card that is already built into your phone. It does the same job as the little plastic tray SIM — it connects you to the mobile network, gives you your number, your calls, your texts and your data. The only real difference is how it gets there: instead of waiting for something to arrive in the post, you download it.

How an eSIM actually works
Think of the eSIM as a tiny locker inside the phone. It ships empty. When you buy a line, the network writes your details into that locker — your number, your plan, your allowances — and the phone starts using it. That writing step is the "download", and it takes seconds.
- Same networks, same signal. An eSIM is not a different or lesser kind of connection. It uses the same UK network masts as a plastic SIM.
- Same real number. Huddle lines are proper UK mobile numbers starting 07 — not VoIP, not an app-only number. They ring, they text, they receive bank codes.
- Nothing physical to lose. The eSIM cannot fall out, snap, or vanish into a school bag.
- Reusable slot. Remove a line and you can add a different one later. The locker is not single-use.

Nearly every eSIM-capable phone is dual SIM. That means an eSIM can sit happily beside a SIM you already have. Both can be active. You choose which one makes calls, sends texts, and uses data.

Is an eSIM number a real mobile number?
Yes. Huddle lines are real UK mobile numbers starting 07, on the mobile network — not internet or app-only numbers. They work with banks, two-factor codes and normal calls.
Does an eSIM use more battery?
Not meaningfully. Running two active lines at once can use a little more, because the phone keeps two connections alive, but most people never notice it.
Can I move an eSIM to a new phone?
Yes. You transfer or reinstall the line on the new handset. It is not welded to one device, though the exact steps vary by phone — see how to set up your eSIM.
What happens to the eSIM if I cancel?
There is no contract, so you can cancel or remove a line at any time. The eSIM simply stops working and the slot on the phone is free for something else.
