An eSIM and a physical SIM do exactly the same job: they connect your phone to the mobile network and give you your number. The signal is the same, the number is a real UK 07 number either way, and calls, texts and data behave identically.

When a physical SIM still suits
We are not going to pretend eSIM wins every time. A plastic SIM is still the better answer in a few real situations.
- The phone does not support eSIM. Older handsets and many budget Androids simply cannot take one. Check with does my phone support eSIM?
- A locked hand-me-down. If a handset is still locked to another network, plastic from that network keeps working while eSIM will not.
- You swap phones constantly. Moving a physical SIM between two handsets takes ten seconds and no internet.
- No connection at setup time. Installing an eSIM needs Wi-Fi or data for a minute or two.
- Very basic phones. Feature phones, some kids' phones and older tablets are tray-only.
You can have both

Is eSIM coverage worse than a normal SIM?
No. An eSIM connects to the same UK network masts as a plastic SIM. Coverage and speed are identical.
Can I switch from a physical SIM to an eSIM and keep my number?
Yes. Request a PAC code from your current provider and give it to us — your number moves to the eSIM. See keep your number when switching.
Is an eSIM safer if my phone is stolen?
In one respect, yes: a thief cannot pull the SIM out to dodge tracking. But your line is only as protected as your phone lock, so use a PIN or biometrics.
Can I go back to a physical SIM later?
With another provider, yes — there is no contract tying you to Huddle, and you can take your number with a PAC code. Huddle itself is eSIM only.
